OUGD504 - Study Task 1: What is Design for Print?

Identify a minimum of 5 examples of the effective/creative use of print in the following areas of design:
  • Branding and Identity
  • Packaging and Promotion
  • Publishing & Editorial
  • Information & Wayfinding
Branding & Identity
This business card uses an effective approach to combining embossing and digital printing. I like how this has used the embossing for the detail instead of the main focus of the card.

These business cards use coloured edges to make it interesting and effective. The use of spray paint adds some colour to the otherwise plain card.

This is a creative use of design in the fact that it uses a wax seals for sealing up envelopes. This adds an interesting aspect to branding and makes it more textured.

This die-cutting makes for an interesting logo on a business card instead of just printing it. It makes it more visually interesting for the viewer and makes it stand out against other standard business cards.

This foiling adds and interesting aspect to the branding as it is something that will catch the light and catch the eye on the user. It makes it more interesting than just printing it out, and differentiates it from others.

Packaging & Promotion
The use of an embossed label differentiates it from other products in a similar industry. It adds an authenticity to the label and makes it look a lot more vintage and considered than a simple print.

This is a creative take on promotion because instead of printing the sunglasses as part of the photographs, the physical products are there and are in use for the promotion. This makes it more visually interesting for the viewer and stands out amongst other promotional material.

The use of foiling makes the packaging stand out, and is eye catching. Teaming this with the scripted font makes it all very eye-catching and look very classy.

Using this type of packaging is very uncommon for wine bottles, and usually looks scruffy, however in this situation, the printed drawings over the paper makes it much more interesting and classy looking.

This is an interesting piece of promotional design as it isn't just vector designs or photographic designs, it is a 3D object photographed in place of the actual product. This makes it much more fun and a design that stands out compared to other promotional material of this kind.

Publishing & Editorial
The use of stock and presentation is what makes this an interesting piece of design. Instead of classically printing and presenting, this is made to look like a common newspaper. It gives it a much more approachable feel.

This is an interesting piece of editorial design as it isn't a way I've seen a book being published before. Instead of using the general idea of a book, with a page to page guide, it is a book that opens out a lot and becomes very noticeable.

The use of foiling on the cover of this publication is a creative way to reflect the content, jewellery. It makes the catalogue more eye-catching as it focusses on the design instead of just presenting the content.

This piece of publishing experiments with different sized stock throughout to present the information. It means these pieces can act as dividers to the information and makes it more interesting to the reader as they potentially get a different sized stock on every few pages.

This is an interesting use of die cutting in publishing as it makes it much more interesting than just printing the information on the cover. It joins together the cover and book into one product to work together.

Information & Way finding

This way of representing information is creative because of the overall aesthetic. Sometimes information graphics are displayed in boring, linear styles, but presenting it in this way makes it more desirable to look at and really breaks the information down to a readable level.

This type of way finding is useful in a large city as it shows information in a clear and consistent way. Keeping it at this design throughout a city makes it very easy for walkers to understand where they are in relation to what is around them, and have clear routes to where they need/want to go.

This is an interesting way of presenting information as it is very uncommon to include this kind of design into them. It makes it accessible to all people, and the bright colour makes it very noticeable as well.

This is an interesting way to represent way finding because of the diversity of it. Instead of using a simple arrow and words, it makes it more of a design instead of a visually aid.
http://www.behance.net/gallery/AD12-Wayfinding-System/9909129

This is a creative way of displaying a way finding system as it is inspired by the underground/subway way finding design. It incorporates the design with the idea of getting around a building, displaying a system that is very easy to follow.
