OUGD406 - Speaking From Experience Research

As I am creating a publication, research into the different aspects of publications is key to the success of my outcome. I initially started to look at layout designs:
Coloured pages
Most of the time coloured pages have been used as a breaker between sections of the book. They're easily definable when looking at the side of a book, so it's very clear to the reader where one section finishes and another starts. They have also been used to display important text or something that the viewer needs to look at more than the rest, including quotes. Text is the only thing present on these pages and is in either black or white to get maximum visibility.

Contents Pages
The contents page is pretty important in a publication, although sometimes it is discarded. It is the navigation for the publication, making it easier for the reader to find exactly what they're looking for. They can be simple, like the second image, or a little more experiment driven, like the third image.

Content
The most important part of the publication is the contents on the pages. The layout needs to be something easy to read, not too daunting and long, as  well as fun and experimental. The layout depends entirely on the content and how appropriate it is to the subject. All the layouts above are something I need to take into consideration as they could all be used for my publication.

Magazines/broadsheet
Looking at the magazine/broadsheets online, they seem to all go with two or three colours and stock, with all the images in monochrome. This would be a cheap alternative to full digital colour. They are also quite creative and dynamic in their designs as they only have a few colours to work with.

Series
A series of books is also something to consider. Making a series means that there can be less content in a book, and the layouts can be more relaxed and experimental. A series also works well as it means it is easy for the reader to find the content they are looking for instead of having to go through a whole big book. Looking through the book series' online, they all seem to be colour coded, which is something I am going to take into consideration.

Screen Printing
There doesn't seem to be many screen printed books around, so creating one could be an interesting project. The ones that are done are all made up of two or three colours and stock, allowing a certain creativity for the designer.
